Evil Templar Knights Break Earth’s Rotation

Posted in Politics & World with tags , on May 20, 2010 by joeylabartunek

Ok, so that’s not reeeeaaally what happened, but I liked that title.

Apparently the end of the world is at hand, the remnants of the Knight’s Templar must have finally set in motion the mystical badness that will inevitably lead to end times and here is our first sign.  From BoingBoing:

The original pendulum, which was used by French scientist Leon Foucault to demonstrate the rotation of the Earth and which forms an integral part of [Umberto] Eco’s novel’s labyrinthine plot, has been irreparably damaged in an accident in Paris.

The pendulum’s cable snapped last month and its sphere crashed to the marble floor of the Musee des Arts et Metiers.

In 1851, Foucault used the pendulum to perform a sensational demonstration in the Paris Pantheon, proving to Napoleon III and the Parisian elite that the Earth revolved around its axis. Such was its success that the experiment was replicated throughout Europe.

Somewhere the evil templar's plans are finally coming to fruition. Or something.

I read Eco’s ‘Foucault’s Pendulum’ about a decade ago, and it was one of those joyous blasts of history and paranoia that I love so much. And while this article has nothing to actually do with the book, it does have to do with the Pendulum that is front and center.  And I can’t help but think that the destruction of a device used to show a basic fundamental force of the planet breaking is a sign of something.

Maybe it’s a sign that it’s ice cream day.  Probably.

War Macheen – The Costume

Posted in Comics, Funny Stuff with tags , , on May 18, 2010 by joeylabartunek

Scanning my morning news, I came across this video of a guy who has built a scary good recreation of the War Machine suit, complete with closing visor and spinning useless gattling gun.  From

Anthony Le, 25, has been a fan of Iron Man since he was a kid, but when he heard that the comic-book superhero was hitting the big screen in 2008, he was inspired to build his own Iron Man suit. That version was more of a costume, but his new one, finished just in time for the movie’s sequel, edges much closer to the real thing. With its dent-proof exterior, motorized faceplate and spinning mock Gatling gun, his take on the movie’s War Machine suit could easily frighten a supervillain.
Le, a fitness consultant, studied some concept sketches of the suit posted on the Internet. He used thin, high-impact urethane for the armor, cutting it into plates and joining them with some 1,500 rivets and washers. He sculpted a clay helmet mold and then used a liquid resin mix to create the final product. But that was just cosmetic work. He also added a small servo motor that opens the faceplate, as in the movie, and built a gun out of pipes and a motor. LEDs in the eyes and chest-plate further add to the illusion.
Le plans to wear the suit to the movie and already has quite a following, especially at sci-fi conventions. “I’m kind of hard to miss,” he says.

Let’s Get Moving Again Shall We

I can only hope he's sword in hand battling some dragon in Valhalla or something.

Alright, we’re getting back into the swing of this with a couple days of geeky reposts to whip me back into an updating state of mind.  Original content returning shortly or as soon as I shake the cobwebs off a bit more.

Oh, and big sad RIP to Frazetta and Dio who both left the planet this past week while I wasn’t updating.

RIP Frank Frazetta a man who's influence and artistic vision was unmeasurable

Song for the day (obviously):
