The Harryhausen Monster Mash

Posted in Film with tags , on June 30, 2011 by joeylabartunek

Thanks to BB for linking to this awesome collection of every Ray Harryhausen  monster ever animated.

As someone who grew up being fascinated, entertained, and inspired by his otherworldly creations (and even meeting the man once!) this warmed a tiny corner of my black heart.

New Kick Ass Trailer Kicks Ass

Posted in Film with tags , on February 22, 2010 by joeylabartunek

I dunno if this is really a new trailer, but I hadn’t seen it before and thought it was badass so here it is.  Lot more focus on Hit Girl and Big Daddy in this one for better or worse, heh.

Personally, I can’t wait for this flick, I loved the comic, and the adaptation looks pretty damn spot on.

Welcome Back to Primetime, Bitch, err Freddy.

I’m going to avoid all the snarky comments that come to my mind when the words “Michael Bay” or “remake” come to mind, I’m sure you can fill those in yourself without any nudging from me.   And I sort of passed over the trailer for the Bay produced “Nightmare on Elm Street” remake, because I was trying to reserve more judgement until I saw a bit more.  I mean, I’d like to be enthusiastic that Rorshach (Jackie Earle Haley) is playing Krueger, that’s a great call and reason enough to be excited.

But so much of the trailer seemed like slightly re-shot scenes from the original to me, so I thought it best to shut my mouth just a little longer.   But to quench any thirst for Nightmare info, here’s a new image leaked from toymaker NECA showing the first good look at the Dream Master.  Of course, except for what looks like shoddier makeup than the original, not much has changed.    Fuck, I’m dropping this before an ill-informed rant comes spilling from my finger tips.

It's good that three or four decades did shit for Freddie's fashion sense.

For those that missed it too, here’s the trailer I was referring to:

Universal Martial Artists

I guess it was inevitable that once the flood gates of UFC fighters jumping out of the Octagon and into other media outlets started, there would be no holding back more and more fighters from taking a stab at the acting bug.  Of course, I never in a million years would have expected the Eastern Block werewolf himself, Belarusian Andre Arlovski to show up in a flick, much less a sequel to a cheesy, fan favorite action flick side by side with  it’s two original stars.  But then I saw this:

JCVD, Dolph Lundgren, AND Arlovski?  You can feel the cheese bubbling forth already… Sold.

Black to Pen ‘Doc Savage’ Pic

Posted in Film with tags , on October 26, 2009 by joeylabartunek

Oh this makes gets me all ten shades of excited, from Dark Horizons:

Acclaimed action film scribe Shane Black (“Lethal Weapon,” “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”) is set to pen the film adaptation of the Doc Savage comic book series.

Because Man of Cocoa Butter wasnt nearly as intimidating.

Because Man of Cocoa Butter wasn't nearly as intimidating.

Black tells AICN that the story will be an original one (rather than an adaptation) that will attempt to encapsulate the feeling of the whole collection of author Lester Dent’s work (encompassing nearly 200 stories).

The character, an adventurer with near-superhuman skills and intelligence, was originally published in 1930’s pulp magazines and Black says the story will be written for that time period and will include the Fabulous Five (five recurring companions who each appeared in different books).

Star Trek” and “Transformers” scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are set to produce.

There’s so much good stuff in such a small article I’m not sure I even know where to begin.  Oh I know, Shane fucking Black?  Doc fucking Savage?  Produced by the Fringe guys?  Excuse me while I take a geeky moment to calm myself down.

There.

It’s too bad I didn’t hear about this sooner, my friend Jennifer hung out with Black for a bit at the screen writing expo last week, I would have made her grill the bastard for info regarding this.  Oh well, C’est la vie.
